Austria coach Manfred Schmid relied on a five-man defense against the serial champions. Georg Teigl started on the right alongside the three center backs Johannes Handl, Lukas Mühl and Christian Schoissengeyr. In attack, Marco Djuričin returned to the starting eleven.

Red Bull Salzburg defeated FC Barcelona in a test match during the week. Compared to the 7:1 against SV Ried, coach Matthias Jaissle made two changes: Mohamed Camara replaced the calf injured Zlatko Junuzović, Antoine Bernede started instead of Luka Sučić.

Good first half

Salzburg was dominant at the beginning, as expected, but the first chances were found by the Violets. After a counterattack via Manfred Fischer and Dominik Fitz, Georg Teigl appeared in front of Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Köhn, but shot over the goal from a good 20 meters (6.). A shot by Markus Suttner after an assist from Marco Djuričin was blocked for a corner (9.). The first opportunity for the home team came in the 13th minute: Rasmus Kristensen shot next to the goal, Patrick Pentz would have been on the spot. Against Karim Adeyemi, Pentz saved Austria from falling behind (26th), Antoine Bernede missed the goal from the penalty spot (29th).

Austria found it difficult to get in front of the Salzburg goal in the course of the first half, Christian Schoissengeyr clearly missed a header after a Markus Suttner corner kick (34th). On the other side, Austria was lucky with a crossbar header by Benjamin Šeško (36.). Otherwise, the defense remained stable and so the game went into the halftime break with 0:0.

Adeyemi scored the winning goal

Both coaches saw no reason for a change at the break, Salzburg continued to dominate the game. Patrick Pentz was able to save a great chance from Antoine Bernede (55th), Markus Suttner deflected a shot from Rasmus Kristensen for a corner (58th). Christian Schoissengeyr had another small headed chance after a free kick (59.).

After an hour, Jaissle brought on fresh attacking players in Nicolás Capaldo and Junior Adamu, with Benedikt Pichler replacing Dominik Fitz for Austria. A little later, Noah Ohio made his Bundesliga debut, coming on for Marco Djuričin. Unfortunately, Salzburg managed to score 1:0 in the 72nd minute, Karim Adeyemi scored after a preliminary work of the very strong Dane Rasmus Kristensen. Another goal by the leader of the scorers list was prevented by Patrick Pentz with a great save (79th).

With Aleksandar Jukić and Matthias Braunöder for Manfred Fischer and Vesel Demaku, Schmid drew his last change options. Austria got into the game a bit better, Noah Ohio showed his speed, but ultimately failed to hit the bar (80th). In the final phase, there were no more scoring chances and Austria was narrowly beaten by Salzburg.
