Goal is a home win against Lech

Austria Wien welcome Polish champions Lech Poznan to Viola Park in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday at 18:45. The Violets will be looking for their first win in their fifth group match in front of around 12,000 fans to keep their chances of progress alive.

The first duel in Poland ended with a 4:1 victory for Lech. Austria had the chance to take the lead in the first half with a penalty at 1-1: "I think we were the better team in the first 60 minutes in Poznan. We missed a penalty and had another great chance from Andreas Gruber and could have led at the break," explains Manfred Schmid, who knows what will be important in the home match:

"It will be crucial that we are more efficient up front and defend better, then we will definitely have a chance. It doesn't matter which players can't be here tomorrow - our goal is to win this game," emphasises the Austria coach.

Lessons from the group games

While Austria suffered two defeats against Villarreal, Lech played Hapoel Be'er Scheva to two draws (0-0 & 1-1):

"We watched those two games, of course - and a few others. Lech Poznan have a team that is strong in play, but they always give away zones to play in. They are strong in transition play and have a very strong striker up front (note: Mikael Ishak). It's clear that we want to win, but the rest of the defence at the back has to be better than in the first game," said Schmid.

The constellation of Group C

In order to still have a chance of advancing to the knockout phase on the last matchday in Israel, Austria would have to win at home against Lech Poznan. Then next week a win against Be'er Scheva would be enough to advance if Lech do not win in the tie against Villarreal. A draw or defeat against Lech would see the Veilchen eliminated.

Personnel news

The personnel situation has been tense lately due to many injuries. "Unfortunately, this has not changed fundamentally. Lukas Mühl is still out, Aleksandar Jukic had a fever and is questionable. With Andi Gruber, too, we will only be able to decide on match day whether he is in the squad. Only Johannes Handl is back in training and could be an issue again," said coach Manfred Schmid. Otherwise, the long-term injured El Sheiwi, Wustinger, Husković and Raguž are missing.
