1-3 against LImassol – Austria Wien eliminated in UEL Quali

Maudo Jarjué had the ‘Violets’ hoping after his early goal, but an unfortunate course of the game with a penalty, an own goal by Johannes Handl and a goal by Gianniotas sealed Austria Wien’s end in the Europa League qualification.

Christian Ilzer changed the violet team on several positions compared to the 5-1 away win in Mattersburg and this time set on a 3-4-3 system: For the injured Madl, Jeggo, Ebner, Serbest and Prokop he brought Maudo Jarjué, Vesel Demaku, Christoph Martschinko, Alexander Grünwald and - for the first time in the new season - Maximilian Sax was new in the starting line-up, which thus consisted of ten Austrians.

Austria superior, highly controversial penalty

The ‘Violets’ almost had a dream start: After a nice cross by Dominik Fitz from the right Alexander Grünwald shot volley, but the ball went past the right pole (2’). Austria Wien remained on the trigger, after a free-kick Stephan Zwierschitz comes to a dangerous header (8’). Ivan Lučić is challenged for the first time in minute 15, he fended off a cross in front of the approaching Gakpé.

Then the deserved lead: Foul on Vesel Demaku - Alex Grünwald raises the free-kick over the defensive line exactly on Jarjué’s head, goalkeeper Mall is too late - 1-0 (18’). Austria Wien remains on the trigger, repeatedly comes dangerously into Apollon’s penalty area, the biggest chance in minute 32: Christoph Monschein is sent forward by Grünwald, plays out former Rapid Wien player Szalai, passes back on Fitz, who doesn’t come to the ball very well.

Instead, just before the break, the more than controversial equalizer for the Cypriots: Iannotas stumbles in the box, referee Pawel Gil sees a foul by Jarjue and to the surprise of the ‘Violets’ gives a penalty. Gakpé remains sovereign and scores the 1-1.

Apollon scores two more goals

The second half began very hectic at first, then the ‘Violets’ had their first chance: Florian Klein shots volley after a corner. Out of the blue, the lead for Apollon: Cross from the left, and Johannes Handl falsely deflects the ball into his own goal - Ivan Lucic has no chance (56’).

Christian Ilzer brings with Jimmy Jeggo and Bright Edonwonyi fresh forces for Max Sax and Dominik Fitz, a little later, however, the knockout strike: Corner for Apollon, Gianniotas scores from the penalty area into the far corner – 3-1 for the hosts (67’).

For the ‘Violets’ the game was over. Christian Ilzer brings Benedikt Pichler, the new signing from Austria Klagenfurt also has some good scenes, however, he couldn’t change the score. Apollon Limassol wins 3-1 and with a total score of 5-2 moves up in the Europa League Playoff.
