2:4 – Defeat against AS Roma

After a dream start and the 1:0 by Larry Kayode AS Roma turned the game with goals from Dzeko (2), De Rossi and Nainggolan.The goal by Alexander Grünwald came too late. FK Austria Wien must accept the first defeat in the UEL group stage.

Coach Thorsten Fink sent the same eleven players as against Sturm Graz on the pitch of the Ernst-Happel-Stadium. Compared to the game in Rome Lukas Rotpuller got preference over Patrizio Stronati, Osman Hadzikic replaced the injured Robert Almer.

AS Roma coach Luciano Spalletti had to play among others without Franesco Totti because of a muscle injury. Florenzi and Manolas were also not available due to injuries.

Dream start, but then the Italians scored

Full of confidence and with a broad chest FK Austria Wien started - already in minute 2 the “Violets” were celebrating. Venuto moved on to the right, his ball missed Rüdiger and goalkeeper Alisson. Larry Kayode was standing in the right spot and tucked the ball in - 1:0.

But the joy did not last long - Perotti was released wonderfully on the right. Edin Dzeko utilized his cross from close range and equalized (5.). Shortly after, Dzeko came to a finish after a corner, this time Hadzikic remained the winner (10.). AS Roma kept up the pressure. After another corner Dzeko came to a header, Christoph Martschinko and Osman Hadzikic prevented each other from the save and served Daniele de Rossi the ball - 1:2 (18.).

The “Violets” kept showing good attacks, especially Venuto was dangerous on the right. A free-kick by Alexander Grünwald from a promising position went over the bar (23.). Roma stayed dangerous during standards, again Dzeko was free to fire after a corner, but this time his volley went over the bar (29.). A wonderful pass by Raphael Holzhauser landed with Grünwald but Kayode and Venuto unfortunately could not utilize his cross (40.). With the close residue they went into the half time break.

Nothing to change during the second half

At the beginning of the second half, Osman Hadzikic was the centre of attention, our goalkeeper could prove himself twice in one-on-ones against Perotti and Dzeko (49., 51.). A shot of Perotti went by the far post (57.). The “Violets” reported back with a chance from Kayode, but the Nigerian was one step too late after a pass from Venuto (59.). After a solo by Venuto the ball missed the goal (64.). On the other side Dzeko was on the spot again, the scorer first hit the bar after a cross from El Shaarawy, then into the goal - 1:3 (65.).

Afterwards the “Violets” tried to make more pressure, after a corner Lukas Rotpuller came to a header, but the ball went over the crossbar (68.). For the final phase Thorsten Fink brought Kevin Friesenbichler for Larry Kayode in the game. However, all efforts were butchered by the Italians – 1:4. A free-kick was blocked shortly but Nainggolan was there and scored (78.).

Shots by Holzhauser and Pires missed the goal (83., 86.), until Alexander Grünwald scored and the numerous appeared fans cheered (89.). Unfortunately, too late, FK Austria Wien had to admit the defeat against AS Roma.
