With a system change to 3-5-2 coach Thomas Letsch wanted to break though St. Pölten goal, which no teams was able to do for the past three games. Michael Madl, Igor and for the first time Christian Schoissengeyr formed the triple-line in the defense. Florian Klein and Cristian Cuevas moved forward in the midfielder next to Thomas Ebner, Uros Matic and captain Alexander Grünwald. Christoph Monschein and Bright Edomwonyi started as the striker-duo.
SKN St. Pölten, started the season excellent with already ten points, and made only one change after the victory in Innsbruck: Kwang Ryong Pak started instead of Issiaka Ouedraogo next to Rene Gartler as striker.
The 'Violets' started dominantly, Monschein barely missed a pass by Alexander Grünwald (5'). A free-kick by Grünwald from the midfield reached Uros Matic, who extended beautifully on Monschein - the striker failed on St. Pölten goalie Christoph Riegler (12'). The first chance for the hosts had Daniel Luxbacher, who shot past the goal after groundwork by Sandro Ingolitsch (15').
Thomas Ebner injured his knee after half an hour, but could continue after a short treatment. The game had lost some speed, the next shot on goal - by Pak on the side of St. Pölten - was only in the 36th minute. A finish by Christian Schoissengeyr during stoppage time was parried by Riegler - with the 0-0 the first half ended.
The second half was also dominated by the visitors: Riegler saved a shot from Bright Edomwonyi (50'), Monschein missed a cross by Florian Klein (51').
Thomas Letsch brought Alon Turgeman for Christoph Monschein after one hour. The Israeli was falsely called back because of an off-side position by referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca shortly after, taking away a good chance for Austria Wien (61'). A free kick by Alexander Grünwald was almost deflected by Daniel Drescher into his own goal, Turgeman's header, after the following corner kick, landed on the crossbar (71').
Letsch took a risk, brought the much more offensive Dominik Prokop for Thomas Ebner in the 76th minute. Matic tried a scoop into the far corner, but missed the goal (79'), a full shot by Prokop was a littlle too high (80'). A remarkable solo and a nice pass by Prokop to Edomwonyi remained unrewarded, Drescher prevented the Nigerian's finish (84'). A shot by Fountas - which went far over the goal - was the first chance for St.Pölten in the second half (87').
Austria Wien continued to fight for their victory, Turgeman shot over the goal from the penalty area (89'). Manuel Haas missed the hosts’ match point with a shot on the crossbar (90' + 4'), the 'Violets' had to settle for one point in St. Pölten.
