Austria Wien borrows the 23-year-old left-back for a year and has an option for purchase in the summer of 2019. Cristian Cuevas, who was under contract with Chelsea FC for a few years joins the ‘Violets’ from the Chilean first league club Huachipato FC.

Technical Director Ralf Muhr says, "I am convinced that, with Cristian Cuevas we have a strong, technical highly talented left-back, who also fits very well into our game idea. He brings a lot of experience in the professional field and is also a player with perspective. We have been looking for reinforcement in the left-back because of Christoph Martschinko's injury.

Head Coach Thomas Letsch, "I am delighted that we signed Cristian Cuevas, a very aggressive player with international experience, and he is a positive guy who can certainly help our team."

Cristian Cuevas, "I'm happy to sign with Austria Wien, the stadium looks great, I think players can be very happy with the training conditions here, we want to play a good season and qualify for the European Cup."

Debut in the Chilean national team against Poland

The Chilean national team player was able to watch Austria Wien’s game for the first time on Sunday against Austria XIII during their 4-0 victory. "I was able to see that we have good players who want to play football - even though the opponent was not that strong of course."

Cuevas played for Twente among others with Michael Liendl and Marko Kvasina, and got himself some tips from the former ‘Violets’. "Of course, we also talked about Austria Wien - but also about life in the city of Vienna."

The Chilean was signed by Chelsea in 2013 at the age of 18, was lastly loaned to Twente Enschede, where he was a permanent member of the team in the highest Dutch league. In the years before Cuevas played amongst others in Belgium for VV St. Truiden and in Chile at Club Universidad de Chile. The former U20 team player celebrated his debut in the Chilean national team against Poland in June 2018.
