Austria Wien & “Strong muscles for the weaker”

As part of the last home game against WSG Tyrol in the General-Arena the club helped raise awareness to incurable muscle diseases under the motto “Strong muscles for the weaker”. The Austrian E-Rolli-team was on the violet artificial turf before the game, the siblings of the sick children and teenager accompanied the players of both teams on to the field.

In Austria, more than 20,000 people suffer from an incurable muscle disease, more than half of those affected are children and teenager. With the restriction of motor skills, the quality of life of people suffering from muscle is also severely impaired.

The courses of muscle diseases are different, some are slow and not lethal, others mean a life in a wheelchair from childhood on. Together with Benedikt Pichler and Mirko Kos Austria Wien supports the Austrian Muscle Research and affected children.

‘Initiatives like those of FK Austria Wien help us draw attention to these rare diseases,’ said President of the muscle research Prim. Günther Bernert, neuropaediatrician and head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Medicine at SMZ Süd.

The fact that people can be physically active with appropriate tools, despite a muscle disease, is being demonstrated by E-Rolli football, in which Austria also has a national team. Last Saturday, the E-Rolli players were guests in the Generali Arena, their siblings were able to come to the pitch with the players.

Austrian Muscle Research

The Austrian Muscle Research supports both research projects that should help to better understand the mechanisms involved in different forms of muscle diseases in order to gain new therapeutic approaches as well as research projects aimed at improving the medical-therapeutic care of patients with muscle diseases. Support for selected research projects and international networking should create the conditions for a breakthrough in the research and application of new therapies.

‘Muscle research has not only been able to specify symptoms and predict the course of a disease, but also to improve the quality of life and extend the life expectancy of people with muscle diseases through new therapeutic approaches. Advances have also been made in the area of drug therapies in recent years’, Bernert is cautiously optimistic.

It is also an important concern for the Austrian Muscle Research to inform those affected and their relatives on a regular basis about the current state of research and the possible therapies and to increase the awareness of the public.
