FK Austria Wien reaches the UEFA Europa League group stage

Despite a 0:1 defeat against NK Osijek, a determined Austria returned to the group stage, a goal by Boban in the second half was not enough for the Croatians.

Jens Stryger Larsen left the team for Udinese Calcio, David de Paula started on the right in the back-four-chain. Compared to the first leg in Croatia the starting line-up changed only on one further position, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi started on the right in the midfield.

NK Osijek coach Zoran Zekic made three changes to his starting line-up following the home defeat against Austria. Barac, Mudrazija and Pusic replaced Lesjak, Petrovikj and Lyopa.

“St. Pölten” inferno

In a very intense initial phase with slight advantages for the guests, the “Violets” had the first chances. A counterattack over Felipe Pires was defused by Malenica (4'), a shot by Dominik Prokop was too central (9'). Shortly after, the young star missed a cross from Tajouri-Shradi (18'). Christoph Monschein came to a finish from the edge of the penalty area – his shot went just past the second pole (23').

The “Violets” lurked on counterattacks at the beginning, but took over the game increasingly. Raphael Holzhauser tried shots from great distance but they did not find their way into the goal (34', 37'). After a cross of our number 26, Monschein hit the bar.

Tarkan Serbest missed the goal with a long shot (44'), the powerful Abdul Kadiri Mohammed headed after a corner by Holzhauser (45'). The first half ended with a lucky 0:0 for the guests.

Boban let the “Violets” tremble!

Osijek opened the second half with a shot from Mudrazija, Osman Hadzikic was on the spot (46'). The “Violets” answered quickly, Holzhauser stepped up to a free-kick at the edge of the box. Malenica fished the ball from the corner (53'). Christoph Martschinko started an attack on the left, his finish was blocked by Barac (55'). Osijek had a chance through Pusic, but Hadzikic parried the shot (61'). Shortly after the ball was in the goal, Boban scored from short distance (62').

Pires missed a good chance to equalize after assist by Prokop (65'), Fink brought fresh forces with Kevin Friesenbichler for Monschein (68'). Tarkan Serbest had to be exchanged, Thomas Salamon took his place in the midfield. Boban missed a corner from Bockaj standing completely free from short distance - luck for the “Violets” (79').

Happy end!

The “Violets” had quickly digested the shock, Thomas Salamon tested Malenica, Tajouri-Shradi missed the rebound shot (81'). Pires’ shot went past the goal after assist by Prokop (82'). Alexandar Borkovic came into the game for Dominik Prokop during the final minutes. Pires and Kadiri had the last chances of the game, Osijek was no longer dangerous. FK Austria Wien is once again in the UEFA Europa League group stage due to the away victory in Croatian.
