Grünwald: “We will have our chance in Cyprus”

Despite the 1-2 in Vienna captain Alex Grünwald is confident before the away match against Apollon Limassol (Thursday, 7pm, Nicosia, live on ORF 1): “Despite the defeat, we still have the chance to go further in the UEFA Europa League. After the first half, it could have been 2-0 as well last week. We'll have our chance and we'll have to use it.”

Austria Wien needs at least two goals in Cyprus to make it to the UEL play-off, where they will probably play against PSV Eindhoven on August 22nd and 29th. The Dutch top club won the first round against Haugesund away in Norway with 1-0. In the possible play-off Austria Wien would have the away game first.

“We have nothing to lose and we know that we must succeed in Cyprus,” emphasizes Alex Grünwald, who like Monschein, Prokop, Serbest, Martschinko and Pentz was in a similar situation two years ago when Austria Wien was in the third qualifying round and won the away game against the city rival AEL Limassol 2-1 and thus won the round after the 0-0 at home.

The good feeling of the European Cup specialist

“Of course, you can take a positive feeling from this experience. We know what to expect in Cyprus. It was a close game back then that could have tilted in both directions - and it can and will be similar this time. Everything is possible for us,” says the captain.

The 30-year-old has already successfully qualified for four group stage with Austria Wien. Since Grünwald plays for the ‘Violets’ continuously, since 2011, the team has won all knockout duels on the international stage, in eight of them our number 10 was on the pitch. “That's a nice statistic - for me personally as well, but it is a new challenge year after year,” says the former violet rookie.
