Holzhauser “made a mark for fairness”

Raphael Holzhauser has made a strong statement following the 325th Wiener derby at the Allianz Stadium (1-1).

Less than five minutes into the Derby on Sunday the game had to be interrupted. Just like during the last derbies Rapid fans through dangerous projectiles onto Austria Wien players.

The fact that Captain Raphael Holzhauser was hit and injured (!) did not come as a surprise given the multitude of objects.

Referee Rene Eisner said, “He (Raphael Holzhauser) told me he was hit and showed it to me. I think it's alright for the player to say that he wants to keep playing. If he cannot keep playing I have to abandon the game.”

It may seem incomprehensible to some not to abandon the game after the repeated events, and therefore to have demanded a 3-0. Nevertheless, sportsmanship, respect and fairness remain values that last longer for FK Austria Wien than short-term results. Especially since other committees are required to finally draw appropriate consequences.

Holzhauser wrote a statement Monday morning, which he published on his Facebook page. In it he explains, “I have made a mark for fairness by continuing to play and once again I have not let them take away the fun of the game for me. [...] As soon as violence is involved, we should all distance ourselves.”

It is important not to make a sweeping judgement, but to act precisely against those who draw attention to themselves through violence and unsporting behaviour.

“I’m fighting for Austria Wien and my team and I’m thankful to all fans who do not tolerate this kind of violence.”

The left footer also writes, “As a football player I want to feel safe in my job, like everyone else and I expect action from the clubs and the Bundesliga.”

Finally, our number 26 states on his Facebook page, “I wish us all a nice week and hope we see each other in the stadium on Saturday against LASK!”
