Madl: "The game idea has to become our second nature"

Michael Madl, 31, defence chief and former rookie from the Austria Wien Academy, knows, “The content mediated by coach Christian Ilzer is already very close to what Austria Wien stands for and what the Austria family expects. It's up to us to implement it.” ‘Mighty Moe’ learned playing football at Austria Wien from 2002 to 2010 and is currently finishing his fourth training camp since returning to ‘Favoriten’.

The conditions in the training camp in Loipersdorf and Fürstenfeld are excellent, which can already be said after the first few training sessions: “The pitch is in great condition and we also have very good possibilities for regeneration”, emphasizes Madl, who finds a positive in the current heat wave:

“Of course, it is not always pleasant when it is 34 degrees outside, but the same could happen to us during the championship - maybe that's why it's not so bad. It’s even harder than usual - that is part of a preparation too.”

On Tuesday evening Slavia Prague, an actual competitor is waiting for Madl and the team. The Czech double winner and Europa League quarter-finalist starts their championship in less than two weeks:

“That's where we'll be able to compete - such games provide an important insight. It will be a good test, a good training session that will show what we need to improve,” says the 31-year-old.

There were only a few changes in the squad, the majority of the team from the previous season still remains. “The quality is consistently good. We have young players with potential. We are now working to bring in a true winning mentality. We try to get more out of the team – try to train even harder and more,” says Madl.

The training camp also offers enough time to internalize the game system. Christian Ilzer favours a 4-4-2 with a flexible diamond in midfield. On Monday afternoon, the 'Violets’ studied numerous offensive versions. “For a centre-back, there is a lot of change in comparison to the back five, but we have enough tactical training to do it well right at the start of the season,” explains Madl, who already knows the Austria Wien game style.
