Solar power for the new Generali-Arena

FK Austria Wien’s new Generali-Arena is a model project in terms of ecology, environmental awareness and sustainability. Together with long-time partner VERBUND, a photovoltaic system was installed on the roofs of the arena. With a total output of 340 kWp, the system supplies many areas of the stadium, including the Academy, office space and lawn heating, with self-generated solar power.

On July 13th 2018, the new Generali Arena of FK Austria Wien will be inaugurated with a match against the German top club Borussia Dortmund. The stadium was rebuilt and extended with 42 million euros during the past 24 months. During construction, special emphasis was placed on sustainability and environmental criteria.

The new home of FK Austria Wien has been certified by the international DGNB Certification system of the Austrian Society for Sustainable Real Estate Management (ÖGNI). This made it possible to optimize the Generali Arena from an ecological and economic point of view.

During the selection of a variety of different materials, the origin of these products was taken very seriously, local and regional products were clearly preferred - without neglecting the quality. Among other things, this is reflected in the insulation of the building, which achieves maximum values and thus works in an environmentally friendly manner.

Sustainability program "Violett ist mehr"

As part of the "Violett ist mehr” program, sustainability and the careful use of resources continue to be the focus of attention. In the future, rainwater will be collected around the Generali-Arena, stored in a cistern and used specifically for irrigating the lawns.

Thanks to a state-of-the-art heating and cooling systems and a reinforced turf system, the Generali-Arena's turf heating system offers faster reaction times and significantly lower energy consumption. As an ‘ÖkoBusiness Wien’ operation, which was awarded in March 2015, FK Austria Wien is also committed to maximum energy efficiency and thus to sustainable technologies such as LED lighting or photovoltaics.

"For FK Austria Wien, the issue of sustainability, which is a fixed component of short, medium and long-term planning for many projects, has been deeply anchored for many years. Respect for the environment, the responsibility to society, our role model effect for tolerance, social commitment and the support of the youth are clearly defined goals," says FK Austria Wien CEO Markus Kraetschmer.

"Thanks to the photovoltaic solution by VERBUND, I am pleased to be able to use the stadium and academy roofs for renewable energy generation in order to make our new home even more sustainable."

Solar power by VERBUND

In cooperation with the long-time partner and sponsor VERBUND, Austria’s largest power producer and number one in electricity through renewable energies, the largest photovoltaic system of an Austrian football club was installed. The construction was carried out by SOLAVOLTA, a VERBUND subsidiary.

On the roof of the north stand, solar PV panels with a capacity of 280 kWp were installed on an area of 1,640 m2, producing 300,000 kilowatt hours of solar power per year. The roof of the Austria Wien Academy stand is also being used for its own green electricity generation with a 60 kWp system on 354 m2.

Both plants have a total output of 340 kWp and were funded by the Green Electricity Fund for Vienna. As part of the ARENAPOWER campaign, Austria Wien fans can participate in it and set a sign for sustainability and environmental awareness.

“Sport and sustainability belong together”, said deputy CEO of VERBUND, Johann Sereinig. "As a long-standing sponsor and partner, it was important to us to bring in our expertise in sustainable power generation with renewable energies and to support FK Austria Wien with solar power!"

Many areas of the Generali-Arena, such as the video wall, the offices, the academy and lawn heating can in the future be supplied almost exclusively with self-generated electricity, which in the long run will result in cost benefits as well."
