Austria Wien started the new year with Patrick Pentz in the goal, Florian Klein, Christian Schoissengeyr, Igor and Cristián Cuevas formed the back four. In midfield coach Thomas Letsch brought Maximilian Sax, Jimmy Jeggo, Uroš Matic and Dominik Prokop. The goals should be provided by the strikers Bright Edomwonyi and Ewandro. Thomas Ebner was missing because of an inflammation in the adductor, Sterling Yateke was not yet eligible to play.
GAK qualified for the UNIQA ÖFB Cup quarter-finals by victories against Mannsdorf, Vorwärts Steyr and KSV without getting a single goal. Ex-GAK player Enrico Kulovits came during the winter to support head coach David Preiß.
The game started quickly, Austria Wien made the first shot at goal: Ewandro took over a corner by Max Sax, but his shot went far over the goal (5'). GAK introduced themselves with a shot by Alexander Rother, Patrick Pentz did not have to intervene (15'). Practically in return Dominik Prokop scored after assist by Bright Edomwonyi to the early lead for the ‘Violets’ (15').
The ‘Violets’ continued their game, but Ewandro did not hit the ball well enough after Sax's ideal pass (17'). GAK goalkeeper Haider parried a finish by Edomwonyi into the short corner (21'). The Nigerian also had the next chance for the Viennese, his header after a corner by Sax went passed the goal (22v). Cristián Cuevas tried it from a distance but his shot was too high (27'). Shortly after a cross by Edomwonyi missed the goal by a hair’s breadth (27'). A nice one-two with Florian Klein was completed by Dominik Prokop, but his shot went just as another attempt in the 31st minute over the bar (28').
GAK was beginning to become dangerous after standard situations, but the game was clearly dominated by the Viennese. 70% ball possession and 14 shots by Austria Wien paint a clear picture. The last chance of the first half had Edomwonyi, his overhead kick after assist by Igor went just over the goal (44').
GAK came stronger out of the dressing room, Philipp Wendler send Alexander Rother forward, his finish went over the goal (52'). Ewandro had the chance to make a preliminary decision, Dominik Derrant prevented the Brazilian’s finish with a tackle at the last moment - goalkeeper Haider was already defeated (54').
The numerous missed opportunities should still come back to haunt Austria Wien, captain Marco Perchtold scored from a half-right position to the surprising equalizer (57'). Only a few minutes later it got even worse, Ewandro saw a questionable red card by referee Ing. Sebastian Gishamer after an alleged professional foul (59'). Alexander Bauer hit the bar with the subsequent free-kick (61').
Haider deflected a long shot by Christian Schoissengeyr to the crossbar (62'), after which Alexander Grünwald celebrated his comeback - our number ten came into the game for Max Sax (65'). After a yellow-red card against James Jeggo only nine ‘Violets’ were left in the 68th minute – as well as Ewandro’s this exclusion was also a harsh decision.
Bauer put a header over the goal (70'), Luka Kiric sealed the deal in the 86th minute, the Slovene scored the 2-1 for the regional league team after assist by Peter Kozissnik. Austria Wien gave away a certain victory and dropped out of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
