Thomas Letsch drew his conclusions from the result and performance last Saturday and switched to a 3-4-3 system in the second attempt: Michael Madl was suspended, Tarkan Serbest moved into the centre, supported by Mohammed Kadiri and Alexandar Borkovic. Florian Klein and Thomas Salamon moved forward to the four-player midfield. The storm trio was formed by Venuto, Christoph Monschein and Dominik Prokop. Raphael Holzhauser, Stefan Stangl and Felipe Pires - the three players who are leaving Austria Wien - were not in the squad.
With the change in the back Thomas Letsch wanted to stabilize the defensive - and initially succeeded. The ‘Violets’ improved compared to Saturday and had three specific chances for the lead: Alexander Grünwald had the first great opportunity after two good crosses by Thomas Salamon - but his shot landed in the outer net (10'). Then Grünwald tried to score into the far corner after a nice cross by Thomas Salamon, but his shot was imprecise (16'). Finally Venuto made his way through on the left and set up for Grünwald - but Dobnik threw himself into his shot (26').
Then Wolfsberg became dangerous - Tarkan Serbest failed to find a back pass in distress, but Pentz could save Orgill's shot. The lead for Wolfsberg was unfortunate: a shot by Frieser from a distance deflected by Kadiri, left no chance for Patrick Pentz (43'). During stoppage time in the first half WAC was able to increase their lead: Ashimeru lifted the ball over the violet defence and Frieser directly took over the ball – 2-0 (45' + 2'). Thus, the half time break started with the same result as last Saturday.
The second half was now a character test in view of the score - and the ‘Violets’ proved their character, threw everything into the battle and tried to turn the game around. First a long-range shot by Alexander Grünwald. Then Austria Wien’s best phase during the game - the first goal, a beautiful scoop by Dominik Prokop into the far corner, woke Thomas Letsch’s team again (62'). Dobnik barley saved a hard shot by Venuto to a corner (65'). After a shot by Tarkan Serbest (69') the best attack of the ‘Violets’: direct play by Venuto on Prokop, who put back on Venuto, whose shot landed in the outer net. (70').
WAC fought as well with a dangerous cross by Palla and a shot by Jovanovic - both times Patrick Pentz could prove himself (74').
In the final phase, Austria Wien pushed forward, WAC remained dangerous in counterattacks. Coach Thomas Letsch brought junior team goal scorer Alexander Frank and Dominik Fitz in the offensive game, shortly after Michael Blauensteiner, the third player who stood on the field last Friday during the 5-0 triumph of Austria Wien’s junior team against FC Karabakh - but the equalizer did not happen, the three points remained in Wolfsberg.
