Thomas Letsch started the 328th Vienna Derby with Thomas Ebner left in the back four, James Jeggo and Uroš Matić formed the defensive part in midfield, Dominik Prokop started alongside Maximilian Sax in the offensive. Letsch relied on Bright Edomwonyi and Christoph Monschein up front.
Rapid coach Dietmar Kühbauer made six changes in his starting line-up after the victory against the Glasgow Rangers on Thursday: Christopher Dibon and Marvin Potzmann started in the defence, Dejan Ljubicic, Christoph Knasmüllner and Philipp Schobesberger and Deni Alar were new in the line-up.
After a fantastic choreography on the East Stand the game started rather observant. In the 15th minute Stefan Schwab made the first shot, Patrick Pentz was on the spot. After a cross by Sax a shot by Monschein was blocked (18'). Austria Wien’s striker was fouled in the midfield shortly after, James Jeggo shot the free kick. Christian Schoissengeyr headed the ball to the 1-0 into the far corner (22'). After a long pass from Mateo Barac, Marvin Potzmann pulled in the middle, shot over Pentz and equalized – 1-1 (29').
Dejan Ljubicic could only stop Bright Edomwonyi with a foul, referee Harald Lechner had no other choice than to show him the red card, and the guests from Hütteldorf had to continue with ten players after 33 minutes.
The following free kick was shot by Michael Madl, threaded through the wall over James Jeggo. Richard Strebinger defended the ball to the pole. The Australian was on the spot quickly and scored the 2-1 (35'). Only a few seconds later Austria Wien again outnumbered their rivals - Christoph Monschein moved out of his own half, past Mateo Barac and Christopher Dibon and lobbed the ball over Strebinger to the 3-1 (37').
Christoph Monschein missed his chance to score again after a shot by Max Sax, the ball went past the pole (39'). The spectacular first half was concluded by Florian Klein, who took on a corner kick by Uroš Matić and headed the 4-1 from the edge of the penalty area (42').
The ‘Violets’ did not ease up in the second half, kept upstaging Rapid. Christoph Monschein missed the goal after assist by Matić (52'), a header by Bright Edomwonyi - after a free kick by Matić - was parried by Strebinger (54'). Florian Klein missed after a nice changeover by Dominik Prokop (56'). SK Rapid scored the long-overdue 5-1 themselves, Mateo Barac steered a cross by Prokop into his own goal (57').
Shortly after the game was over for Prokop, Dominik Fitz came into the game in the 63rd minute. Edomwonyi failed on Strebinger, Matić's shot was too central (66', 70'). Alon Turgeman was allowed to join the game for the last 20 minutes instead of today's very strong Christoph Monschein, the Israeli also landed on the scorer list:
After a cross by Michi Madl Turgeman headed into the corner (78'). Thomas Letsch made his last change with Vesel Demaku for Maximilian Sax, the game was decided long ago. The offensive efforts of Rapid Wien were limited to a few safe long shots, Austria Wien and their fans celebrated the last game minutes of the year. A shot by Demaku went past the goal (90'), the ‘Violets’ won the derby 6-1.
