Late goals brought defeat against Salzburg

Despite putting up a good fight, Austria Wien was defeated through late goals by Schlager (86') and Minamino (90'+4') – 0-2 against Red Bull Salzburg.

Thomas Letsch started the game against the champion with a system change and two changes in the line-up: In a 4-3-2-1 system Cristián Cuevas started again in stead of Thomas Salamon. In the defensive midfield started Vesel Demaku. Bright Edomwonyi was back in the squad for the first time since September 23th, Kevin Friesenbichler was not able to play because he fell ill.

Red Bull Salzburg beat Rosenborg Trondheim in the European Cup on Thursday, Coach Marco Rose made five changes to his starting line-up. Zlatko Junuzovic celebrated a comeback after a calf injury.

Austria Wien was able to handle the champion during the first half

Both teams began the first 15 minutes rather restrained, not a single shot on goal was recorded. Austria Wien performed well in the defensive, tried quick counterattacks over Maximilian Sax and Christoph Monschein. Igor came to a finish after a corner by Uroš Matić, his volley went past the long corner (26'). On the other hand, Smail Prevljak appeared in front of Patrick Pentz, but also missed (27').

Christoph Monschein’s knee had to be treated, but he was able to continue. James Jeggo and Christian Schoissengeyr prevented a great chance for Salzburg against Munas Dabburg at the last minute (42') and a shot by Sax went wide over the goal (43'). Austria Wien pushed against the champion with 57% won duels, the first half ended with the 0-0.

Late goals ...

Thomas Letsch had to make a change to the break, Igor could not continue with an ankle injury. Venuto came back into the game, Thomas Ebner took over the centre-back position. Andre Ramalho was surprised by a cross from Andreas Ulmer and missed a shot on goal (51'). Venuto dribbled into the box in the 57th minute, he fell, but rightly so no penalty shot was given. A good counterattack over Demaku and Sax was intercepted by Ramalho in dire need, shortly after the Brazilian almost caused an own goal after a cross by Matić (59', 60') - the best phase for the ‘Violets’.

Patrick Pentz was on the spot during crosses by Lainer and Ulmer (65', 69'). Vesel Demaku was exchanged after 74 minutes and an outstanding performance, Niels Hahn celebrated his debut in the highest Austrian league at the age of 17. A little later, Bright Edomwonyi came for Max Sax.

Salzburg increased the pressure: a header by Junuzovic defused Pentz with his foot (76'), a shot by Xaver Schlager went over the goal (78'). Schlager kept trying, but Pentz remained the winner during a header as well as a deflected shot (81', 82'). In the 86th minute, however, Pentz was powerless, substitute Takumi Minamino managed to assert himself in the penalty area, he crossed for Schlager to tap in – 0-1.

The over 10,500 fans in the Generali-Arena were still with the team, but Minamino made everything clear with the 0-2 in the 94th minute. Austria Wien had to give in to the champion after a brave performance.
