Sargon Duran: Assistant coach with pride an passion

The 32-year-old Viennese made a meteoric coaching career. Even as a professional player, Sargon Duran occupied himself with tactics analysis, is always curious. He sees great potential in Austria Wien’s squad. His father, a ‘Violet’, took him to the stadium early on, where he now works with joy, gratitude, humility and pride as assistant coach of Austria Wien under Christian Ilzer.

Christian Ilzer, Uwe Hölzl and Dominik Deutschl have already worked together successfully in recent years at Hartberg and WAC. Sargon Duran was also hired at the head coach's request. “For me, this is a great honour - Austria Wien is a big club with tradition. When I got the chance to join the coaching team of Austria Wien under Chris, I did not have to think twice about it.”

The assistant job at Austria Wien is so far the tip of Sargon Duran’s career. Only a year ago, he ended his professional career at Wiener Neustadt, where he started as assistant coach, took over the head coach position at the end of the season for the last six games.

“My coaching life really started five years before, when I was 26 years old –in that moment I felt that I wanted to be a coach,” emphasizes the Viennese, who regularly shares videos about analysing tactics under www.taktikanalysee.com (click here to get deep insights into football) for several years now:

“For many years I've been trying to absorb everything and ask myself about every coach I watch: how would I do it?” Duran continues to educate himself further, got his diploma for Football Management at the International Football Institute in Ismaning last year.

He was particularly impressed by Pep Guardiola's style of play and training methods: "I watch many coaches, but he's particularly impressive. I've read all books about him, have watched every game of his team for four years. I like the way he lets them play football. It's the Cruyff Methode: positional play and ball possession - that really suits my personality,” says Sargon Duran.

In the first weeks of preparing for Austria Wien, the Viennese got to know the players better and is convinced: “There is still so much potential in our team - it is already really good, but there is much more. We are far from maximum. I am very confident that we will be successful.”

This path to success leads through tactics and the game system. In the latter, the new coaching team is currently forcing a 4-4-2 with a flexible diamond in midfield: “In the centre this gives us a superior number of players, you also have enough players for your own combinations - the system offers many advantages,” explains Duran, who grew up in the third district near the Generali-Arena and immediately felt at home in ‘Favoriten’:

“The coaching team, the team and the whole club have made it very easy for me. It feels like I've been here for a long time – Austria Wien has a very personal and informal atmosphere.”
